I’m Julia, the artist, idea collector, and occasional creative-rabbit-hole explorer behind Blue Owl Crafted.
As this is my first letter from the studio, a proper hello felt like the right place to begin.
Blue Owl Crafted is more than a collection of products in a shop. It’s a growing illustrated world filled with hand-drawn characters, midcentury designs, whimsical artwork, folk-inspired creations, and stories that often begin with one small sketch, before wandering off somewhere completely unexpected.
Sometimes that sketch becomes a print or a notebook. Sometimes it grows into an entire collection. Occasionally, a character develops such a strong personality that they begin demanding additional scenes, new adventures, and possibly their own animated career.
I have learned not to argue with them.
When a flower started to move
One of those unexpected adventures happened recently with Hibiscus, a character from my Petal Pals collection.

Until then, she had existed as a drawing. Then, through a little creative experimentation and quite a lot of curiosity, I watched her petals and features begin to move.

It was only a few seconds of animation, but it felt as though one of my drawings had suddenly taken a tiny breath.

That small moment opened an enormous door in my imagination. Could my characters welcome people into the Blue Owl Crafted world? Could they appear in little stories? Could Pip the Friendly Robot wave hello? Could an entire illustrated world slowly come to life?
This is exactly the kind of creative rabbit hole I want to share with you here.
Social media is wonderful for showing finished artwork, but it rarely leaves much room for the story behind it. These letters will allow me to open the studio door a little wider.
I’ll share sketches, works in progress, first peeks at new creations, unusual sources of inspiration, honest experiments, behind-the-scenes, and the occasional thing that doesn't behave quite as expected. Those are often the most interesting parts.
Blue Owl Crafted is for people who prefer personality over perfection, stories over sameness, and artwork that feels as though a real person had an idea, picked up a pencil, and followed it to see where it went.
The shop is where the artwork finds its way into your world.
These letters are where I’ll share how it came to life.
I also promise not to email you just because someone said businesses should send an email every Tuesday at 9:07 a.m. I would rather send you something interesting to open than write with the intention of filling a schedule.
